Recycling levels across Warrington borough in 2008/09 improved on the previous year new Defra figures show.

In 2008/09 WBC collected just under 98,000 tonnes of household waste – a reduction of 6,000 tonnes from the previous year (this reduction equates to a saving of nearly £200,000 in avoided landfill tax!). In terms of the proportion of that household waste that is recycled, composted and re-used the figure increased by 5% to 37.94% thanks to the introduction of the blue bin recycling collections. The Council aims to be recycling 40% of household waste by 2010 so seems to be on target to achieve this.

Warrington still has a little way to go to catch some of its neighbouring authorities – Cheshire achieved close to 48% recycling, composting and re-use.
