Act quickly and get a great return on investment with renewables!

December 8th, 2009 | ZoeCohen

Did you know that you can achieve higher returns than most high interest accounts and high street investments by investing in renewables for your home? And the sooner you act the more you’ll achieve (even 6 to 8% pa!). And of course you’ll be reducing your carbon footprint in the process – a clear win:win. So read on…

Feed-In-Tariff

The UK Government introduces a ‘Feed In Tariff’ (FIT) early next year. This is the same type of scheme that has been in place throughout Europe and in parts of America for the last 5-years. It is an exciting proposition for a self-generator, for the following reasons:

1/ Feed In Tariffs are Government legislated and as such are compulsory across the Utility Industry (although of course Governments can change legislation in the longer term)

2/ The scheme will run for a long period of time eg, 25-years for PV (photo voltaic cells which generate electricity).

3/ You are paid a set amount for every unit of electricity you generate, even if you have used it for personal consumption! (the tariff varies by type of renewable, etc and the max is 36.5p per unit for PV)

4/ The unit price applicable when you join the scheme is set for the complete 25-year period.

5/ When you are not using the electricity, it is sent back to the grid and you are paid an additional rate of 5p per unit for the ‘overspill’.

Grants

There are grants available if you go via Government approved suppliers/fitters. The maximum amount of grant, regardless of system value, is £2500. The grant is not means related, and is still available at the time of writing, although it is to be phased out soon to make way for the FIT.

Low Carbon Lymm

Renewable Solutions, a NW based renewables company, have secured Manufacturer Support to varying levels on different technologies. This is due to the potential level of business that could be generated via the community scheme. You can contact mike@renewablesolutionsuk.com to find out more.

The Good Energy site www.generateyourown.co.uk also offers impartial advice, and their shop www.goodenergyshop.co.uk provides a route for purchasing and getting installed the relevant bits of kit if you’re more inclined to do your own thing.

The Future

In addition to a feed in tariff for energy apparently in 2011, the government intends to launch a similar thing for renewable heat. ( A bit like the Good Energy  ‘HotRocs’ scheme launched last year.)

Check this out, save money on your bills and reduce your carbon emissions!

Did you know… Over 40% of the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions, the main greenhouse gas which causes climate change, actually come from the energy we use every day – at home and when we travel. Things like insufficient insulation, leaving lights on unnecessarily or overfilling the kettle all waste energy and result in needless carbon dioxide emissions.

What can you do today?
Under the Governments Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT) scheme, energy suppliers are obliged to encourage people to use energy more efficiently by helping with the supply and costs of installing energy saving measures and providing advice on energy efficiency. Call the Energy Saving Trust on 0800 512 012 to find out more.

Around half of heat loss in a typical home is through the walls and loft making them the two biggest causes of heat loss in the home. It’s definitely worth getting yours insulated, as it will save you both money and reduce your carbon footprint.

Cavity wall insulation

Cavity wall insulation

Cavity wall insulation

Just insulating your cavity walls could save you around £115 a year on your fuel bills and 610 kg of CO 2. The installation cost is around £250 (when subsidised under the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target), which means it would pay for itself in just over two years. If every house in the UK that could installed cavity wall insulation it would cut CO2 emissions by nearly 4 million tonnes, enough to fill the new Wembley Stadium 500 times, and save around £690 million a year.

Solid wall insulation

If your home was built before the 1920s, it probably has solid walls. Solid walls lose even more heat than cavity walls, but you can also insulate them either internally or externally. Solid wall insulation will save you around £400 a year and two tonnes of CO2.

Loft Insulation

Loft insulation acts as a blanket, trapping rising heat from the house below. If you currently have no insulation and you install the recommended 270mm depth you could save around £150 a year on your heating bills and around 800kg of CO 2 per year.

Draught proofing

If you can feel cold air coming in around the windows in your home it means warm air is escaping. In a typical home this heat loss accounts for 20% of the total heat lost.
Draught proofing is an easy DIY task that simply fills gaps and decreases the amount of cold air entering your home. By installing draught proofing around doors and windows you could save around £25 a year on your heating bills and reduce your emissions by around 130kg of carbon dioxide (CO 2) each year.

There could even be grants and offers available to help you pay for draught proofing.

Tank and pipe insulation

Insulating your hot water tank is one of the simplest and easiest ways to save energy and money. Fitting a British Standard ‘jacket’ that’s at least 75mm thick around your tank will cut heat loss by over 75% and save you around £35 per year. The jackets themselves cost about half that, meaning that you’ll reclaim your initial cost in around 6 months.

Fitting insulation to hot water pipes is easy if they are accessible. The insulation will cost around £10 and save you around £10 a year, which means you should recover the cost of fitting within a year. Professional help may be required to fit insulation to harder to reach pipe work, which would incur extra cost.

Local family join Guardian’s national 10:10 campaign and pledge to make a difference

October 18th, 2009 | ZoeCohen

Local family the Barkers have practical reasons for cutting back on energy, ones that are common to many during this recession. The flourishing economy of their household in Warrington, took a knock when Louise was made redundant in December after 22 years with a tool hire firm. Earlier, husband Tim had negotiated a career break after 20 years in logistics management, to take on the restoration of a few classic Porsche 911 cars – a lifelong enthusiasm, but not one designed to bring in the family’s only income. The couple have two children in local primary school – Emma, 10, and William, 7 – who are undoubtedly going to play a role in encouraging the family’s planned 10% cut. Louise, echoing parents the country over, says: “They’re always warning us if they think we’re harming the environment – you know, we should compost that, Mum, or let’s recycle that, Dad.” The national curriculum is proving a highly effective agent of reform…
