Warrington Borough Council plans to close local recycling centres – read more here

February 15th, 2010 | ZoeCohen

Warrington Borough Council wants to close Woolston and Stockton Heath recycling centres as part of its plan to cut the budget deficit by £30 million over the next three years.

But the move has angered residents living by what would become the one remaining recycling centre at Gatewarth Tip off Old Liverpool Road. And for the rest of us it would mean much longer journeys to take our recycling – or fewer people even bothering to do so.

LOCAL BATTERY RECYCLING POINTS GET CLOSER

January 31st, 2010 | ZoeCohen

On the 1st of February 2010 everyone should get the opportunity to recycle domestic batteries at points close to home following the introduction of new legislation.

The new law which comes from the EU’s Batteries Directive means that any outlet (even online stores) selling more than 32kg of batteries each year will have to provide points where customers can deposit batteries for recycling free of charge. Recycling points will be branded with a distinctive yellow and black battery logo.

The aim of the new obligation is to pass the responsibility of collecting and recycling batteries on to manufacturers and retailers so that the quantity of batteries sent to landfill is significantly reduced.

All batteries that are collected will be sent for recycling but because of the lack of recycling plants in the UK most will be sent overseas for treatment in the short term.

A list of recycling points in Lymm will be published shortly.

Warrington waste performance continues to improve

December 15th, 2009 | ZoeCohen

Recycling levels across Warrington borough in 2008/09 improved on the previous year new Defra figures show.

In 2008/09 WBC collected just under 98,000 tonnes of household waste – a reduction of 6,000 tonnes from the previous year (this reduction equates to a saving of nearly £200,000 in avoided landfill tax!). In terms of the proportion of that household waste that is recycled, composted and re-used the figure increased by 5% to 37.94% thanks to the introduction of the blue bin recycling collections. The Council aims to be recycling 40% of household waste by 2010 so seems to be on target to achieve this.

Warrington still has a little way to go to catch some of its neighbouring authorities – Cheshire achieved close to 48% recycling, composting and re-use.
